Crew test positive
The Pacific Dawn, the cruise ship carrying crew members infected with swine flu, will arrive in Brisbane on Saturday
after being told not to dock at Port Douglas or Cairns.
Tests this morning confirmed three of the ship's crew have swine flu, while swabs taken from two passengers came
back negative. Authorities subsequently cancelled scheduled stops for the ship in the tropics and have instead sent it
back to Brisbane, where it will arrive on Saturday before departing for Sydney.
The state's chief health officer, Jeannette Young, said all 2000 passengers plus the crew of 730 would be given
Tamiflu upon arrival in Brisbane. "The most important thing we need to do is make sure we don't bring the
flu into a part of Queensland that doesn't have it," Dr Young said.
"We'll be working very closely with P&O so we meet this ship and do everything we can do." Nearly 50 people were
tested yesterday at the state's first swine flu clinic at Robina and Queensland Health is investigating whether further
clinics will be opened.
"If we need to, we'll open more. There's no problem with that," Mr Lucas said. Premier Anna Bligh this morning said
there was no need for the Government to use quarantine powers over the ship, which is effectively isolated because it
is at sea.
Ms Bligh said at this stage the State of Origin match at Suncorp Stadium on July 15 would go ahead.
''There is no need for us to consider cancelling any major sporting events or gatherings of people at this stage,
whether that be the Gold Coast Marathon or State of Origin," she said. ''This is a great pity for the passengers but this
is the right thing to do for public health," Ms Bligh said.
The Premier said no passengers had displayed symptoms. However, federal Health Minister Nicola Roxon earlier today
told Fairfax Radio one passenger was being tested.
Meanwhile The global swine flu death toll marched past 100 on Wednesday with one new fatality reported in the
United States and four more in Mexico, the two countries where the first outbreaks were reported. Prior to the latest
North American deaths, the World Health Organisation (WHO) had reported the global toll at 95, with 13,398 people in
48 countries infected with the A(H1N1) virus since it was first uncovered last month.
In Chicago, a second swine flu death was reported by officials, bringing the US toll to 15.
Mexico's four fatalities raised the country's toll to 89 with 100 new infections reported, bringing the total to 4821, the
health ministry said. Around the world, efforts to control the disease continued as new cases were discovered.
Two more countries - the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean and South America's Uruguay - each reported their first
two confirmed cases of swine flu, raising the number of countries with cases to 50.
Chile confirmed 119 cases late on Tuesday, making it by far the South American country most affected by the
outbreak. Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and Ecuador have also reported cases.
In Canada, the number of people infected with swine flu soared past the 1,000 mark with 197 new cases confirmed on
Wednesday, according to health officials. Canada now has 1118 total A(H1N1) cases, including two deaths. The
country has the largest number of infections after Mexico and the United States.
The number of confirmed swine flu cases in NSW has reache 33, including 24 passengers from the Pacific Dawn during
its earlier voyage. The average age of infected people is 25, according to a NSW Health statement, and patients range
from one to 53. Those affected so far had mainly mild illness, the department said, and there was still no evidence of person-to-person transmission of the virus within NSW. Another 324 people are undergoing tests after being suspected
of having the disease.
"The overseas experience is that in a small number of cases deaths have occurred," NSW Chief Health Officer Kerry
Chant said. "So if this goes across the Australian community, one would expect that some members of the community
will unfortunately die as a result of this." Dr Chant says the problem swine flu poses, as opposed to more common flu
strains, is that there's no vaccine to help protect vulnerable people from the disease.
She said all the reported cases in NSW were of people who had either been on the Pacific Dawn or had returned from
overseas after visiting an affected country. There had been no reported cases of local transmission, Dr Chant said.
"It is possible that there is community transmission or some cases that we haven't detected, but we are doing all we
can to look for it," she said. "It is likely we will see an increase in the number of cases as we move into the next few
weeks."
The new cases push the number of swine flu victims across Australia past the 100 mark, Ms Roxon said. She said the
total of 103 jumped from 61 at this time yesterday, and can be expected to increase in the course of the day.
Ms Roxon said most Australian cases had been "mild" but four people had been admitted to hospital.
The minister indicated the Pacific Dawn - which has three crew members who have been confirmed as having swine
flu - will be allowed to berth in an Australian port. "My advice is that an agreement has been reached where the cruise
ship Pacific Dawn will return to a major Australian port where appropriate public health support will be available," Ms
Roxon said.
The Federal Government has placed an order with drug manufacturer CSL for a swine flu vaccine, which is expected to
be developed within the next few months. "We will purchase ... doses to cover 10 million people, based on the current
expert advice that this is sufficient to contain the spread of the disease," Ms Roxon said.
The Government was continuing to develop a strategy for who would get the vaccine. Australia's chief medical officer
Jim Bishop has authorised the release of a batch of antiviral medication from the national stockpile. Ms Roxon said
7500 doses of pediatric Tamiflu had gone to Victoria and Western Australia. Another 10,000 doses had gone to
Victoria, where more than half the cases of swine flu come from. "Localised releases from the stockpile will enable us
to continue with this aggressive containment approach to small clusters of the disease," she said.
"Decisions on the use of the stockpile are taken by the chief medical officer and they take into account issues including
the number of cases, the spread, epidemiological advice and the availability of medicines in states."
