PUTTING TOGETHER A PROFESSIONAL CV FOR THE
SUPERYACHTING INDUSTRY
I have put together some guidelines on how to achieve a professional looking CV. The key is to lay it out in a simple manner. Please donâ??t use text boxes or fancy fonts and use tabs not spaces for lists. On the following page there is a sample layout for you to use. Remember that a captain will be looking at hundreds of CVs so it needs to be simple, concise, clear and to the point. Try and keep it down to just two or three pages if possible.
PHOTO: The photo should be a head shot only, if possible in professional looking attire like a polo shirt. The background should be plain; not in front of lots of boats, or in the bar! Donâ??t just use a photo you have from a night out as this will not impress.
INFORMATION: The first thing we want to see is your name, your age, where you are, and your contact details. Ideally include all the points as listed on the next page.
OBJECTIVES: This does not need to be long but just outline what position you are applying for. Remember to update this for the role you are submitting your resume for each time; a CV stating that you want to be a chef when applying for a Stew position will go straight in the bin! Conversely if you write a long list of positions it will look like you are not very sure what you want to do!!
QUALIFICATIONS: Please list relevant Marine qualifications with date achieved first. These should include Yachtmaster, STCW95, silver service courses, diving qualifications. You can also list if you have a degree or diploma etc but we do not need to see all your high school grades!
MARINE BASED EMPLOYMENT: Start with the most recent first. Put enough detail so that we can see what you have done, but donâ??t go overboard. Bear in mind that the Captain will be able to get some idea of what you have done just by the â??positionâ?? so be fairly brief. If you have spent time day working on various boats do not list every single boat separately; it just looks like you are jumping from boat to boat. Just write the period you were day working and list some or all of the boats worked on with location.
OTHER RELEVANT EMPLOYMENT: List other jobs you have done outside the industry, again most recent first. You do not have to include paper rounds you might have done in your teens etc!
INTERESTS AND HOBBIES: This just gives us a little bit more of an idea about you. Just a brief list is fine.
REFEREES: A traceable list of references. Please list their name, the boat or company they are from and a current phone number and email address
